The reunion comes over two weeks after the center-right partners parted ways, with the National Party refusing to support reforms proposed by the government following a tragic attack at Bondi Beach. The Coalition's reunion was marked by a statement from Liberal Party leader Sussan Ley, who emphasized a forward-looking approach. She joined National Party leader David Littleproud in Canberra, signaling a renewed commitment to working together. The split, which occurred on January 22, was a significant setback for the Coalition, which had already endured a challenging election loss the previous year.
This was the second major split in less than a year, with the previous separation in May 2022 also primarily concerning climate and energy policy. However, the current dispute was more intense, with the National Party abstaining from voting in the lower house and opposing the measure in the Senate, arguing that the hate speech reforms were hastily introduced and posed a threat to free speech.
The legislation in question includes provisions to ban hate-spreading groups and impose stricter penalties on preachers advocating violence. Despite the disagreement, Ley expressed the Coalition's responsibility to find a path back to government, acknowledging the difficult time faced by supporters and the broader Australian public who rely on the parties for scrutiny and leadership.
The Coalition, dating back to the 1940s, had not experienced a split since 1987 until the recent incident. The National Party, which primarily represents regional communities, often aligns more conservatively than the Liberal Party. The Coalition now faces challenges from the populist One Nation party, led by Senator Pauline Hanson, which has gained significant support in polling, while the Liberal Party has lost several seats in the federal election.
