In a significant move that has caught the attention of baseball fans everywhere, the Milwaukee Brewers have finalized an agreement with veteran catcher Gary Sánchez. According to Jon Heyman from the New York Post, the deal will guarantee Sánchez $1.75 million.
At 33 years old, Sánchez faced a challenging 2025 season while playing for the Orioles. He managed to participate in only 30 games and had 101 plate appearances due to complications from wrist inflammation and a more serious posterior cruciate ligament sprain in his right knee. Despite these setbacks, when he was on the field, he showcased his potential by hitting five home runs and achieving a batting line of .231/.297/.418, which translates to a league-average performance (100 wRC+).
This marks Sánchez's second time joining the Brewers in just three years. Previously, during the 2024 season, he played in Milwaukee, where he recorded a batting average of .220 along with 11 home runs over 280 plate appearances. In that season, he primarily served as a backup to William Contreras and took on the role of a part-time designated hitter, participating in 40 games. It is anticipated that in 2026, he will continue in a similar capacity.
Once regarded as a top prospect and even an All-Star during his early days with the Yankees, Sánchez has recently adapted to a backup or part-time player role. For instance, in 2022, he played 128 games for the Twins, racking up 471 plate appearances after being traded from New York to Minnesota. However, in the past three seasons following that year, he has recorded only 648 plate appearances, partly due to injuries sustained last season.
Earlier in his career, Sánchez earned a reputation as a defensive liability behind the plate. However, he has made notable improvements, demonstrating solid defensive skills in 2022 and 2023. His performance dipped closer to average in 2024, but he struggled again in 2025, falling below average according to both Defensive Runs Saved and Statcast metrics, although it's important to note this was derived from a limited sample size of just 175 innings.
As he returns to the Brewers, Sánchez will find some familiar faces among the staff, including players like Brandon Woodruff, Abner Uribe, Trevor Megill, Aaron Ashby, and Jared Koenig. Nevertheless, it’s worth mentioning that the Brewers have seen quite a bit of turnover in their roster since Sánchez's last tenure, which was approximately 18 months ago.
