DEME's Big Win: Unlocking Japan's Offshore Wind Potential (2026)

DEME's recent win in the Japanese offshore wind farm market is a significant milestone, marking a strategic expansion into a new region. This contract, secured through DEME's Japan Offshore Marine (JOM) joint venture and Penta-Ocean Construction, showcases the company's ability to navigate the complexities of offshore wind installation. The project involves engineering works and vessel charter for the installation of 21 Vestas turbines, a substantial undertaking that DEME is well-equipped to handle.

What makes this contract particularly noteworthy is the deployment of 15MW-class turbines, a significant leap in technology. This marks the first time such turbines are being used in Japan and the first application of this size outside Europe, excluding China. DEME's involvement in this project is valued at up to €50 million, highlighting the company's growing influence in the renewable energy sector.

The installation process will be carried out by the jackup offshore transport and installation vessel Sea Challenger, scheduled for the second half of 2027. This project not only reinforces DEME's technical prowess but also underscores its commitment to the energy transition. Frank Jonckheere, general manager for offshore energy in Asia-Pacific at DEME, emphasizes the operational readiness of Japan Offshore Marine, positioning it as a key player in Japan's offshore wind initiatives.

This contract is a testament to DEME's strategic vision and operational capabilities. It opens up new opportunities for the company in the Asian market, particularly in Japan, where the demand for renewable energy solutions is on the rise. As DEME continues to expand its footprint in the region, it is poised to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition, contributing to a more sustainable future.
