Disney World Honors WWII Veteran's 101st Birthday with Emotional Flag Retreat Ceremony (2026)

Disney World honored World War II veteran Herb Maneloveg's 101st birthday with a moving flag retreat ceremony. The 'happiest place on Earth' just got even more magical for one guest celebrating his birthday. Maneloveg, a U.S. Army veteran who served in the 106th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge, was joined by his family for a special celebration at the Magic Kingdom in Florida. The celebration kicked off with a journey down Main Street and a stop to view Cinderella Castle, followed by a special viewing of the Festival of Fantasy Parade, featuring beloved characters like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. Maneloveg expressed his joy and gratitude for the event, saying, 'It’s all I could ask for.' The parade was a wish come true for Maneloveg, who served in the U.S. Army for two years, two months, and two days. He was wounded in battle and later awarded the Purple Heart. Maneloveg's family, including his daughter Susan, also expressed their gratitude for the celebration. The American flag is retired daily at Disney World as a 'patriotic and reflective moment,' and this particular ceremony carried an even deeper meaning as it honored the courage and sacrifices of veterans like Maneloveg. Disney has a long tradition of honoring American military veterans, service members, and their families, with Walt and Roy O. Disney both serving in World War I. The Magic Kingdom has hosted daily flag ceremonies since 1955, and at Disneyland since 1971, to honor veterans and service members. Each day, a guest is chosen among the park's daily visitors to serve as the park's 'U.S. Armed Forces Representative of the Day' during the ceremony. Maneloveg's presence at Disney World was a proud moment for his family, and he expressed his appreciation for the honor. 'The only thing I could ask for is if my wife, who passed away 20 years ago, were still with us,' he said. 'But [my family] made she and I proud of being here.' Disney World's commitment to honoring those who have served was reaffirmed ahead of America's 250th anniversary. 'Not only did we witness a ceremony, but we witnessed history,' said Cappy Surette, senior manager for communications on the Disney Experiences Corporate Social Responsibility team. 'We were honored to salute [Maneloveg] and pay tribute to his military service to our nation.'
