Empowering Ugandan SMEs: A Strategic Partnership for Growth and Sustainability
In an exciting development, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd. has taken a bold step towards strengthening the national content and capacity of Ugandan Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). By signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Industry Enhancement Centre (IEC), EACOP Ltd. is demonstrating its commitment to fostering local participation and sustainable growth.
But here's where it gets controversial... The IEC, established in 2024 by a partnership between TotalEnergies EP Uganda (TEPU), China National Offshore Oil Corporation Uganda Limited (CNOOC), and Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), was born out of a 2013 Industrial Baseline Survey (IBS). This survey shed light on the need to enhance local involvement in the oil and gas sector. IEC's mission is to empower Ugandan enterprises, diversify their offerings, and promote sustainable growth through training and advisory services.
Under this strategic alliance, EACOP Ltd. and IEC will collaborate closely. They will ensure that opportunities from EACOP, its contractors, and subcontractors are promptly disseminated to local companies within the IEC network. Additionally, they will execute IEC-led training programs, stakeholder engagements, and capacity development initiatives across Kampala and other districts. By extending EACOP's network to IEC's contractors and stakeholders, they aim to support IEC's programs and services, creating a powerful synergy.
This MoU is a continuation of EACOP's ongoing efforts to strengthen local participation. To date, EACOP and its contractors have signed MoUs with various professional and industry training institutions, such as the Institute of Surveyors of Uganda and the Uganda Industrial Research Institute. They have also partnered with esteemed tertiary institutions like the Uganda Petroleum Institute, Kigumba (UPIK), Makerere University, and Kyambogo University. These strategic collaborations showcase EACOP's dedication to promoting local involvement and maximizing value retention.
Speaking at the signing event, Habumugisha, Deputy Managing Director of EACOP Ltd., emphasized, "This partnership with the Industry Enhancement Centre is a testament to our unwavering commitment to empowering Ugandan businesses and maximizing local content. Together, we aim to create a thriving ecosystem for SMEs, enabling them to compete and contribute sustainably to the oil and gas sector and our nation's economy."
