German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier honored four individuals during a state visit to Ghana, recognizing their contributions to strengthening the partnership between Germany and Ghana. The recipients of the prestigious Federal Cross of Merit award were Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, Gerald Asamoah, Dr. Ralph Nyadu-Addo, and Martin Wilde.
Professor Frimpong-Boateng, a renowned heart surgeon who studied and practiced in Germany, maintained strong ties with his alma mater. He facilitated and promoted medical exchanges and research collaborations between Germany and Ghana, establishing the National Cardiothoracic Centre and a charitable foundation for low-income patients. Dr. Nyadu-Addo, a pioneer of Ghana-German friendship, played a leading role in establishing a German centre that promoted the German language and study opportunities in Germany. For two decades, he inspired and fostered exchanges and partnerships, including with the Technical University of Munich and the University of Leipzig.
Gerald Asamoah, a former German national team footballer, was honored for his dedication to children with heart conditions and his contribution to Ghana-German friendship. He founded the Gerald Asamoah Foundation, which brought German medical professionals to Ghana for life-saving surgeries. Asamoah also served as an ambassador for the School Without Racism initiative and engaged in projects promoting social cohesion. Martin Wilde was recognized for his outstanding contribution to Ghana's educational sector and efforts in providing technical training opportunities for young Ghanaians. After completing his tenure with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Wilde remained in Ghana, actively involved in development cooperation and educational initiatives.
The awards were presented at a brief ceremony held at the residence of the German Ambassador to Ghana, attended by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Mr. Landshoft, and the awardees' relatives. Mr. Steinmeier, speaking through a translator, explained the reasons behind each award, highlighting the recipients' exceptional contributions to the bilateral relationship between Germany and Ghana.
