Luca Marini's MotoGP Journey: From Ducati to Honda, Dreams, and Challenges (2026)

In the world of MotoGP, Luca Marini's journey is a testament to resilience and ambition. 'Not winning with Ducati isn't a burden,' he asserts, 'I'm cool, only the bike excites me.' This statement encapsulates his unwavering focus and determination, even in the face of challenges and setbacks. Let's delve into Marini's story, his decision to join Honda, and his aspirations for the future.

Three years ago, Marini's name was linked to a potential move to Honda, a move that could have changed the course of his career. The offer from HRC to replace Marc Marquez, who had moved to Ducati, was a significant turning point. Marini, then a VR46 rider, was contemplating a new challenge, a decision that would shape his future.

Fast forward to the present, and Marini has evolved into a rider with a newfound sense of purpose. Despite facing difficulties and injuries in recent years, he has never wavered in his pursuit of success. With Honda, he is dreaming of the World Championship, a goal he remains committed to despite the market's siren song and the dominance of Ducati in MotoGP.

At the Buriram GP, Marini shared his thoughts on the season ahead. 'The World Championship is starting, and there is certainly more awareness of our potential,' he said. 'I feel much better than last year, partly because the bike handles better now, and I like it more. We made excellent progress during the winter. Obviously, it's still not enough, but for us, it's only a matter of time: we need to find a bit more grip at the rear and a bit more performance with the new tyres. If we fix these issues, we can be in the game. The goal is to start from the positions we were in at the end of last season, namely top 6, top 7, be there consistently, take advantage of any mistakes made by those ahead of us, and continue to do our job.'

Marini's decision to join Honda was a strategic move, driven by his desire to win the World Championship and the opportunity to do so with a historic manufacturer. 'It was an opportunity to grow, to become a stronger rider and also a better person,' he reflects. 'I chose Honda because I want to win the World Championship, and doing so with a historic manufacturer like Honda would have special value.'

His time with Ducati, though challenging, has contributed to his growth as a rider. 'In recent years, Ducati has been the best bike on the grid and it gave you a lot of confidence,' he acknowledges. 'The fact is that developing a bike, making it improve, and working to make it the best in every technical aspect is a challenge that stimulates me a lot. In this respect, I feel I have improved a lot.'

Marini's relationship with Honda is rooted in mutual respect and admiration. 'Being part of a factory team gives you something extra as a rider: I think everyone's dream is to officially represent a manufacturer. Doing it for Honda, for what it has meant in MotoGP, makes me proud. And I hope to be able to win with them.'

When asked about his experience with Honda, Marini highlights the challenges and the progress made. 'No, absolutely not. I immediately realized that the bike had very good DNA and rode well, but it was behind in many aspects: not only technical, but also organizational, in the working method, and in the team structure. I tried to help not only with feedback on the track but also by suggesting what to improve off the track. Today, few things have remained the same compared to 2023: a lot has changed, the bike is something else.'

Marini's personal life and values are also integral to his story. 'I've changed a lot in recent years. I consider myself a simple guy who loves his family and his passion. I don't need too many things or too many people to be happy; what I have is enough for me.'

Looking ahead, Marini remains focused on his goals. 'If you weren't a rider?' he is asked. 'I would have liked to be an athlete in any sport. I love the values of sport, both team and individual. It allows you to live an incredible life, even if it involves sacrifices. I find it hard to experience strong emotions in everyday life. Motorbikes were one of the few things that really made me smile when I was a kid. That's why I kept going without giving up.'

Despite not having won with Ducati, Marini remains optimistic. 'No. It's part of the journey. I had a couple of opportunities, but I wasn't good enough to win. That's how it went. Now I'm focused on the present and I want to get to victory as soon as possible with Honda.'

Marini's relationship with Japan is a testament to his cultural openness and respect. 'Marini and Japan seem very close on a human level... Very much so. We are culturally distant, but I respect them very much for their way of working and living. They have many things that we in the West should learn from. In my opinion, the mix between Italian and Japanese works.'

When asked about his future plans, Marini remains focused on the present. 'Dorna asked the riders for their thoughts on the MotoGP market: Marquez said you're returning to VR46 next year, while others say you're going to Yamaha... What's the truth?' he is asked. 'Honestly, I haven't seen anything. We are talking to Honda about renewing because I believe in this project. But the reality of the paddock is that everyone talks to everyone. The only thing you can do is get on the track and try to win every weekend, regardless of the contract.'

Marini's thoughts on Toprak's arrival in MotoGP are positive. 'He did very well to come. In Superbike, he showed impressive strength, winning in spectacular fashion. This year will be a transition: MotoGP is very different. With next year's tyre change, he could become competitive again and have fun.'

Finally, when asked how he would like to be remembered, Marini's response is simple and heartfelt. 'It's not something I think about much. I just want to have fun, feel good, and be healthy.'
