Get ready for an inspiring comeback story! Sebastian Su'a, an NRL rookie, is set to make a powerful impact this year, leaving his injury-filled 2025 season behind. But here's the twist: his journey is fueled by the work ethic of a legendary fast bowler and the guidance of an elite prop.
Sebastian's father, Murphy Su'a, was a trailblazer in his own right, becoming the first Samoan-heritage player to represent New Zealand in Test cricket. His left-arm pace bowling opened doors for the legendary Ross Taylor, another Samoan talent, to shine for the Black Caps.
Sebastian, a tall and mobile forward, is ready to make his mark on the NRL. He finds inspiration in Daniel Saifiti, a prop for the Dolphins and NSW, who played a pivotal role in Sebastian's move from Newcastle.
Cricket was an early option for the New Zealand-born athlete, but he chose his own path, drawn to the physicality of rugby.
"I played cricket through school and for my club, but rugby called to me. I love the physical challenge," Sebastian shared.
His father's love and high expectations pushed him away from cricket, but Sebastian now sees the value in that pressure.
"It instilled a strong work ethic in me, which is essential in rugby league. I'm grateful for the push," he added.
Murphy Su'a's impressive career included 13 Tests, with a career-best performance of 5-73 against Pakistan in 1993, and 12 ODIs.
"Reaching the international level my father achieved is a huge challenge and a goal of mine. Having him as my guide is a privilege," Sebastian said.
At just 22, Sebastian secured an early release from the Knights after conversations with coach Kristian Woolf and senior players Tom Gilbert and Saifiti. He was drawn to the team's culture and Saifiti's mentorship.
"Daniel and his brother Jacob took me under their wing in Newcastle. I trusted Daniel's word when he spoke about the Dolphins, and it felt like the right fit," Sebastian explained.
But his journey wasn't without setbacks. An injury during his first training session with the Dolphins kept him out for most of the year, almost making him an afterthought in the forward rotation.
"Tearing my meniscus was a huge disappointment, but I stayed focused and played a few games for Norths Devils towards the end of the season. I had a full pre-season to prepare for this year, and I'm excited for what's ahead," he said.
The support of his teammates during his rehab was invaluable, and now, fully recovered, Sebastian is ready to prove his worth.
"I've only played one NRL game, but I'm determined to reach that next level."
