In an exciting development for fans of the San Jose Sharks, the team has officially announced that they have secured forward Alexander Wennberg with a new three-year deal valued at $18 million, translating to an average annual value of $6 million. This news was shared by Sharks General Manager Mike Grier, highlighting the club's commitment to retaining key players.
At 31 years old, Wennberg is currently making significant contributions to the Sharks' performance this season. He ranks second on the team with 19 assists and is tied for third overall, having accumulated 26 points thus far. Impressively, he stands among the top ten Swedish forwards in terms of assists during this season. Wennberg has demonstrated his ability to shine under pressure, managing to score points in three consecutive games on three separate occasions this year. Notably, he had impressive back-to-back performances with three points each in victories against Toronto and Pittsburgh on December 11 and 13, respectively. Furthermore, his recent selection for Sweden’s Men’s Roster for the upcoming 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics underscores his status as a top player.
Wennberg hit a milestone earlier this season, playing his 800th career NHL game on October 30. Over his extensive career, he has amassed an impressive total of 396 points, encompassing 108 goals and 288 assists, across 830 games played for several teams, including the Sharks, New York Rangers, Seattle Kraken, Florida Panthers, and Columbus Blue Jackets.
In playoff scenarios, Wennberg has participated in 58 Stanley Cup Playoff games, where he has recorded 19 points—comprising eight goals and 11 assists. His performance during the 2023 playoffs with Seattle was particularly noteworthy, as he achieved personal bests with five assists and seven points in a single postseason appearance.
Before embarking on his NHL journey, Wennberg showcased his talent in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with Frolunda HC, where he had a standout season, registering 21 points (16 goals and five assists) over 50 games. His exceptional skills led him to finish as the league's top junior scorer, earning him the prestigious title of Swedish Junior Hockey Player of the Year, alongside being a finalist for the SHL Rookie of the Year award.
On the international stage, Wennberg has represented Sweden multiple times at the World Championships in 2016, 2019, and most recently in 2025, contributing to the team's success in capturing a bronze medal during his latest appearance. Additionally, he earned silver medals at both the 2013 and 2014 World Junior Championships and won a silver medal at the 2012 U-18 World Junior Championship.
Standing tall at six feet two inches and weighing 190 pounds, Wennberg hails from Stockholm, Sweden. The Columbus Blue Jackets originally drafted him during the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft, selecting him as the 14th overall pick. He joined the Sharks as a free agent on July 1, 2024, marking a significant step in his career.
