A Teenager's Christmas Gift: Overcoming Cancer with Song
Bethany Quinn, a 14-year-old from Coalville, faced a challenging year with a cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy. But she found solace in music, writing and recording a Christmas song to bring joy to her family and friends.
Bethany's journey began when she learned her final chemotherapy session would coincide with the festive season, her favorite time of year. Determined to lift spirits, she penned a song, drawing inspiration from the familiar melody of 'It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.'
Despite her vocal cords being affected by chemotherapy, Bethany's passion for singing remained. Her friend, Elsie Williamson, joined her in crafting the lyrics, and together they named their creation 'Christmas in Coalville.'
The song's recording process was a community effort. Bethany's mother, Rebecca Quinn, shared it online, and Coalville Public Radio picked it up, appealing to local musicians for support. HQ Recording Studio Leicester stepped in, offering Bethany the chance to record professionally.
The experience was life-changing for Bethany, who expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and the community's support. Her mother, Rebecca, initially struggled with her daughter's singing hiatus, but now cherishes the chance to see Bethany happy and smiling.
Elsie, a co-writer, praised Bethany's friendship and support. The song, recorded on December 11, has been shared with community radio stations across the UK, spreading holiday cheer and a testament to the power of music in overcoming adversity.
