A Doctor's Homecoming: A Tale of Serendipity and Family
Healing at Home: A UK-Trained Doctor's Journey Back to Malaysia
In a world where many seek opportunities abroad, Dr. Veenesh Selvaratnam's story takes an unexpected turn. After years of dedication to the UK's National Health Service (NHS), this talented medical professional chose to return to his roots, embarking on a new chapter in Malaysia's public healthcare system.
But here's where it gets intriguing: his homecoming wasn't just a simple return. It was a journey filled with serendipity and a deep connection to his family's medical legacy.
"I always knew I'd come back to Malaysia. The NHS provided me with invaluable experience, but my heart was set on serving my home country," Dr. Veenesh shared. "Little did I know, my return would be so intertwined with my family's history."
Upon his arrival in December 2020, Dr. Veenesh's path led him to Alor Setar Hospital, the very place where his father began his medical career. It was a coincidence that felt like fate. "My dad inspired me to become a doctor. Returning to his starting point felt like a full-circle moment," he added.
And this is the part most people miss: Dr. Veenesh's journey wasn't just about coming home. It was about finding his place in Malaysia's healthcare system and, most importantly, finding love. "Starting a new job in Malaysia was both exciting and uncertain. But I met my wife at Alor Setar Hospital, and that changed everything," he revealed.
From there, Dr. Veenesh's career flourished. He moved to Kuantan Hospital and eventually joined Malaysia's largest teaching hospital, Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and senior lecturer at UM. His expertise in hip and knee specialties, honed over 15 years with the NHS, made him a valuable asset.
"I wanted to contribute to Malaysia's medical research and be part of a teaching hospital. UMMC offered the perfect platform," he explained.
Dr. Veenesh's accomplishments since his return are remarkable. He performed Malaysia's first-ever daycare total hip replacement operation, a testament to his skill and dedication. But the real pride lies in his family's eyes. His father, who passed away shortly after Dr. Veenesh's return, would have been incredibly proud of his youngest child's achievements.
Medical science runs deep in this family. Dr. Veenesh's mother, siblings, wife, and father-in-law all share the title of 'Dr.,' a true family business. "It's a legacy I'm proud to continue," he said.
Despite the challenges of returning home during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Veenesh's decision to come back to Malaysia remains unwavering. "The friendships I made in England and the Liverpool matches I attended are cherished memories. But being close to my family and the lifestyle here makes Malaysia the best place for me," he concluded.
So, why did Dr. Veenesh choose to return home despite his successful career abroad? Perhaps it's the grass being greener on the Malaysian side, as he puts it. Or maybe it's the deep-rooted connection to family and a sense of purpose that only home can provide.
