What makes the Perseids so captivating is their origin. These meteors are particles released from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle as it ventures into the inner solar system. Despite their small size, most Perseids are tiny, resembling sand grains, and they rarely reach the ground. When they do, they become meteorites.
The Swift-Tuttle comet, with a nucleus measuring about 16 miles, is a giant in its orbit. It last visited Earth in 1992 and is expected to return in 2126. While the Perseids are a popular and active shower, it's worth noting that the Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids are also active, though they are less prominent. The Delta Aquariids peak on July 30-31, but a full moon threatens to dim their brilliance. The Alpha Capricornids, visible from both hemispheres, peak around the same time and are not particularly strong, producing fewer than five meteors per hour.
